A low-budget cartoon titled “Here Comes the Bull” is quickly surging to be the hottest meme in China. The movie was made for a few thousand yuan (a few hundred USD), reflecting the popular sarcasm in the Chinese A-share market. The animation is extremely crude. But the movie is embraced by the Chinese audience. Youngsters watch it and laugh, as a show of discontent with the burst of the semi bubble and a languishing stock market. Too bad - the movie has been pulled off the shelf. But it is destined to be a cult classic for years to come.

Laughter Gives Us Plausible Deniability For The Truth We Are Not Yet Brave Enough To Say Seriously. Humor can function like diplomatic immunity for vulnerability. We flirt and laugh. Confess and laugh. Reveal something painfully accurate and immediately soften it with “just kidding.” The laughter does not necessarily erase the meaning. Sometimes it creates an emergency exit. If the truth is welcomed, we can step closer. If it is rejected, we can retreat behind the joke and pretend nothing consequential was ever said. Psychologically, humor is remarkable because it allows incompatible realities to occupy the same sentence. I mean this, but perhaps I don't. I want you to know, but I am not ready to be accountable for you knowing. I am testing the boundary without admitting I am testing it. Teasing can carry attraction, sarcasm can conceal resentment, dark humor can metabolize pain, and laughter can appear precisely when the emotional stakes are highest. The joke becomes a trial balloon for truths too vulnerable to release without protection. But plausible deniability has a price. What protects us from rejection can also protect us from intimacy. If every vulnerable truth arrives disguised as humor, the other person is forced to interpret what we refuse to articulate. Eventually, ambiguity becomes its own form of emotional distance. You cannot demand to be deeply understood while continuously providing people an alternative explanation for everything you reveal. So pay attention to what repeatedly appears beneath the laughter, especially your own. Sometimes a joke is simply a joke. But sometimes laughter is the velvet curtain pulled across an exposed nerve. Some of the most unhinged hate that I receive comes from other academics. The soldiers, the corrections officers, the truckers, and all those from the muscular classes (to borrow @VDHanson's term) seem to greatly appreciate my work and style. The deeply leftist professors seem to have a deep visceral aversion to my personhood including my humour, my spicy sarcasm etc. Why is that? Hmmm.
