Gustavo Gordillo, the 38-year-old co-chair of New York City’s Democratic Socialists of America chapter, washed out of an IBEW Local 3 apprenticeship after failing to show up for work and classes for months. The union terminated him in March. A source close to the union said he never had a strong work record and took the slot “just for show.” Gordillo did not mention the firing when he and his co-chair made an emotional pitch to DSA members last month. They described the burden of national media attention after Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s win and claimed job-site interviews with an earpiece were too distracting. The rank-and-file approved $95,000 salaries plus benefits for both co-chairs. Meanwhile Gordillo lives in a nearly 2,000-square-foot Bed-Stuy row house his wealthy parents bought for just under $1 million through a limited liability company. He previously had his Lower East Side rent covered by the same family setup. The Yale literature student who never finished his degree now collects a near-six-figure socialist party salary while renovations continue on the family-funded home. This is the DSA in action: a trust-fund radical who couldn’t keep a blue-collar apprenticeship now gets paid by the movement to lecture everyone else about the working class.
