Equations often seem difficult and intimidating. Stephen Hawking’s publishers reportedly told him that each equation in A Brief History of Time would reduce sales. However, they allowed him to include E = mc², even though removing it might have increased sales. We must agree with Hawking that equations are important and should not be avoided. However, his publishers also had a reasonable concern. Equations are formal, can look complicated, and too many of them can make a book difficult to read, even for people who enjoy mathematics.
