Their conduct, both in public and online, can affect the dignity and trust associated with the nursing profession. I dug deeper to find out what the actual rules say. Hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes almost always have social media and code-of-conduct policies that cover off-duty behavior. Adult content is a common trigger because employers treat it as a reputation risk: patients may feel uncomfortable, coworkers may gossip or watch the content at work, and the facility does not want its name tied to it. There are documented cases where nurses were let go after colleagues found the account, subscribed, screenshotted it, and took it to management. Sometimes the stated reason is "distraction," not "we object to sex work." In at-will employment states, that is usually enough. Those professional standards are also reflected in state regulations: State Boards of Nursing are responsible for protecting the public and maintaining the integrity of the profession, and many state Nurse Practice Acts include provisions addressing moral fitness, professional boundaries, and conduct unbecoming a nurse. Freedom to post doesn’t always mean freedom from professional consequences. So while nurses certainly have personal lives outside of work, being off duty does not necessarily mean they are exempt from professional standards or their employer’s policies.
