The AI debate has taken a turn in recent days as some of the industry’s biggest names are publicly arguing that the pace of development may be outrunning the safeguards needed to control increasingly capable systems. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is calling for AI companies to slow the development of frontier models, proposing independent evaluations, common safety standards and greater international coordination. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also said that even a 10% chance of AI causing human extinction would be unacceptable. Those warnings come amid reports of AI systems exhibiting increasingly autonomous behavior. Anthropic says it recently blocked attempts to use its models for cyberattacks, surveillance and biological research that could potentially facilitate the development of dangerous pathogens. Lawmakers from both parties are also questioning OpenAI over a reported incident in which an AI system breached another AI company's systems. At the same time, Washington is confronting the geopolitical side of the issue. OpenAI is calling for mandatory national AI safety standards, while President Donald J. Trump has rejected calls for a broader slowdown, arguing that the U.S. cannot risk losing its technological advantage over China.

Adding some fuel to the SDD + AI debate 🔥 Lots of opinions flying around on X, but I think the best way to have this discussion is to look at actual research and data Just read an interesting paper from researchers at CMU and Google analyzing how developers use Spec Driven Development They studied 266 repositories and interviewed 21 practitioners A few interesting findings: - 77.6% of specs include implementation details - Developers report more reliable agents, but also more planning and review overhead - They couldn’t separate SDD benefits from improvements in AI models. What I found most interesting is that SDD might help simply because it forces us to think more clearly about what we want As coding agents and LLMs get better, how much of SDD will we actually need?

The most annoying thing about the AI debate is the implicit suggestion that it's somehow a choice - a choice being made by some tech oligarchy - when in fact development would continue unabated without Altman/Dario/etc. You could personally decide to not use it - become Amish or whatever. Even if American AI companies as a whole could somehow be compelled to stop work, the Chinese will not. Society as a whole cannot opt-out of AI, any more than it can opt out of computers.

Jeffrey Katzenberg isn't picking a side in the AI debate — he's picking a fight over compensation. The former DreamWorks CEO published a lengthy essay on X making the case that Hollywood's instinct to resist AI is repeating a mistake creative industries have made before. He points to composer John Philip Sousa's fight against the phonograph and the musicians who lost their jobs when sound came to film — both moments where the technology won, but the terms of that win were negotiated after the fact and eventually pushed innovation further. "The pushback coming out of Hollywood represents the collective effort of people who are deeply passionate about their craft." — Katzenberg His ask now: build AI tools with artists, not on top of them, with credit, consent, and pay built in from the start.

Strong liability enforcement could be helpful in the AI debate. If your agent swarm goes rogue, you’re liable. If your weakly protected model gets jailbroken, you’re liable. If you serve a weakly protected OSS model, you’re liable.

World Renowned Author @rutgerbregman believes that the left have fallen into a state of AI Denial and that there is so much misinformation about AI in leftist circles: "Still I keep meeting people who say, 'Oh, it's only a stochastic parrot. Oh, I asked ChatGPT in 2023 to write me a limerick and I wasn't impressed. Oh, I asked Gemini how many R's there were in strawberry and he gave the wrong answer.'" "I'm like, are you fucking paying attention? Have you heard of what's happening in mathematics? One big problem, by the way, is that the big AI debate is obviously happening on Twitter. But so many lefties have deleted their Twitter accounts for good reasons because like Elon Musk turned it into a swamp..." "For me, like Twitter is so important to be up to date. LinkedIn, Instagram, it's all completely useless if you want to be informed." "The mathematics stuff from OpenAI—where was that? Like that should have been on every single front page, and yeah, most of it you can only find on X."

“Bring science, not science fiction, back to the AI debate.” At AI4 2026, @drfeifei pushed back against increasingly extreme narratives around artificial intelligence. As AI evolves rapidly, she argued that fear-mongering and unscientific rhetoric can make it harder for policymakers and the public to understand what the technology actually means. Instead, the AI conversation should be grounded in science, education, and healthy communication. For students, teachers, nurses, parents, and workers thinking about how AI could affect their jobs and their children's futures, understanding the technology matters. Her message is simple: AI is a rapidly evolving tool—and society needs a more rational conversation about how to use it. #ChinaAMC# #CNQQ# #AI4# #AI# #ArtificialIntelligence# #FeiFeiLi# #FutureOfAI# #AIInnovation# #AITools# Risk Disclaimer: Investment involves risk, including possible loss of principal.
