🚨 JUST IN: Swift's blockchain-based shared ledger is live, with 17 banks including Citi, HSBC, UBS, BNP Paribas, BNY, Standard Chartered and Lloyds. This is designed to make money 24/7 between the banks who offer tokenized deposits. Final settlement still completes on existing RTGS rails. But for corporates, money will start to feel like it is truly 24/7. That's a major upgrade. Today, tokenized deposits are closed loops. As a corporate I can move money between any two HSBC accounts at 3am on a Sunday. To move it from HSBC to Citi, I wait for Monday at 9am. That has limited their adoption. Swift's ledger takes that wall down. The name undersells what got built. Swift's own release describes "a secure orchestration layer for bank-issued tokenised deposits on their own ledgers." The banks' systems are the ledgers. @Swift built the orchestration between them, and Swift Orchestrator would be the accurate name. I get why that one lost the naming meeting. Also kudos due for the speed here, from concept to live infrastructure in nine months. From the 53-year-old cooperative trusted to move the equivalent of world GDP every 2 to 3 days across 11,500+ institutions. That's friggin fast for anyone, and for Swift it's a statement. Don't bet against the banks here. Don't bet against Swift. Look at the names, though. Citi, BNY and Wells Fargo are in Swift's 17 AND in the tokenized deposit network The Clearing House plans to launch in 2027 with JPMorgan, BofA and Barclays. (JPMorgan sits outside Swift's 17. It already has Kinexys.) Then there's GBPT, Zelle's stablecoin, OpenUSD. The megabanks are backing multiple orchestration layers at once. More closed loops are coming, and how these networks interoperate with each other is where this gets very, very interesting. But again, congrats SWIFT Nick Kerigan et all. I was dubious. I was wrong.
