Nintendo has reportedly suffered a setback after Japan’s Patent Office rejected one of its Pokémon-related patent applications. The patent covered touchscreen gameplay features like moving your character, throwing an item to catch creatures, sending them into battle, and choosing commands during fights. According to the patent office, those ideas weren’t new enough. The examiner pointed to several earlier examples, including a Pokémon fan game shown on YouTube in 2013, saying similar mechanics were already public before Nintendo filed the patent.

Nintendo says it’s working on new ways to fight Pokémon card scalpers after many fans struggled to buy new releases. At Nintendo’s annual shareholder meeting, president Shuntaro Furukawa said the company is aware that demand is still higher than supply, even though The Pokémon Company printed around 10 billion Pokémon cards in 2025. Furukawa said Nintendo is working with The Pokémon Company to help get cards into the hands of real fans instead of resellers. “Nintendo also communicates with The Pokémon Company as needed to discuss appropriate ways to deliver products to consumers. We believe that The Pokémon Company will continue to take measures to respond to this issue.”

The breach affected only a small number of employees and mainly exposed older survey information, including names, email addresses, and some personal documents such as bank statements. No customer data or Nintendo game systems were impacted. The hackers, who call themselves Shadowbyt3$, reportedly demanded a $2 million ransom and leaked some of the stolen data after Nintendo refused to pay. Nintendo said its own systems were never compromised and stressed that people with Nintendo accounts do not need to take any action.
