Imagine a garden that does not simply reflect sunlight during the day, but continues producing its own colorful light after dark.
That is essentially what researchers have managed to create by modifying succulent plants at the biological level. Using specially designed phosphor particles capable of emitting light, they transformed the leaves into tiny glowing surfaces that can be “recharged” before nighttime.
The technique involves introducing the light-emitting particles directly into the plants’ leaves and then exposing them to sunlight or artificial LED illumination.
Once charged, the modified succulents can continue glowing for as long as two hours. At their brightest, the plants produce an amount of light roughly comparable to a small night lamp, making the effect more than just a faint visual curiosity.
The researchers also discovered that the color of the glow could be changed depending on the particles used. Instead of producing only the familiar green fluorescence, the plants could shine in several striking shades, including blue, red, and blue-violet.
When placed together, the different varieties created something resembling a miniature luminous garden.
Even more promising was the durability of the process. The scientists found that the plants could repeatedly undergo the charging and glowing cycle over a period of at least 10 days, suggesting that the effect was not simply a one-time experiment. While the technology is still far from replacing conventional lighting, researchers believe it could eventually lead to new forms of plant-based illumination.
If the technique can be made brighter, longer-lasting, and practical on a large scale, the idea of using glowing vegetation for outdoor lighting — potentially even as an alternative to some traditional streetlights — may not remain purely science fiction.
