According to the Indigenous-led organization Honor the Earth, more than 100 data center projects are currently proposed on or near tribal and rural lands across the United States. For developers, these sovereign lands are highly attractive, offering vast acreage, established water rights, and favorable tax incentives that make multi-billion-dollar investments incredibly lucrative. The federal government has even encouraged these partnerships, with the U.S. Department of Energy promoting data centers as vital pathways for tribal nations to secure long-term jobs, sell energy, and gain valuable ownership stakes in the digital economy. However, this sudden digital land rush has triggered deep skepticism and alarm among many tribal leaders and activists, who view the massive infrastructure projects as a modern form of resource extraction. Critics point out that data centers consume millions of gallons of water and strain local power grids, often with little transparency. Some developers have faced backlash for negotiating through third-party subsidiaries and requiring early non-disclosure agreements, which limits community input and oversight. While some tribes welcome the technology as a means to fund schools and infrastructure, others are pushing back entirely; the Seminole Nation, for example, recently voted unanimously for a permanent moratorium on data centers.
