The total now stands at 31 counts. The four accused: - Jerry Tong, 27 - Zekun (Alex) Wang, 26 - Fei (Frank) Han, 25 - Feiyang (Astrid) Ji, 21 The three men studied engineering. All four are Chinese nationals or ethnic Chinese international students/recent graduates. **Case timeline:** In the early hours of January 24, 2026, two of them entered a Western University engineering building. One was arrested after a foot chase and found carrying a loaded restricted handgun. The investigation quickly led police to a residence at 212 Chesham Place near campus, where they discovered chemicals that could be used to make explosives, finished high explosives, and materials related to firearm manufacturing. Searches also took place at addresses in Orléans (near Ottawa) and Gatineau, Quebec. Police stated the group was manufacturing firearms and explosives. **New charges now specifically name the explosive substances for the first time:** They are accused of possessing: - PETN (pentaerythritol tetranitrate – a military-grade high explosive) - TNT - DNP (dinitrophenol) - HMTD (hexamethylene triperoxide diamine – a highly sensitive homemade explosive) - Lead azide (a primary explosive used as a detonator) Additional charges include possession of stolen Western University property, accessing computer data for firearm design files usable with 3D printers or milling machines, possession of silencers/suppressors, oversized magazines, unauthorized manufacturing of prohibited firearms, and careless storage of a rifle. Tong alone faces 28 charges and remains in custody. Han was denied bail and is also detained. Wang and Ji are out on bail under strict conditions. Police have publicly said the case is not currently being treated as a national security or terrorism investigation, yet the RCMP’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) was involved early on. The motive remains unclear. Tong had previously posted a video promoting a low-cost anti-drone weapons system called MORSLAB. Four young Chinese engineering students storing military-grade explosives and manufacturing guns near a Canadian university campus is not something that can be dismissed as a “hobby.” Canada and Western universities have for years admitted large numbers of Chinese students with minimal serious background scrutiny, especially in sensitive fields like engineering, materials science, and chemistry. The result is people researching how to build bombs and firearms on foreign soil. If they had been used or diverted, the consequences would have been catastrophic. Canadian authorities still claiming this is not a national security matter is absurd. These four must face the full force of the law and should never again be allowed to enter any free country.
