After announcing his international retirement in August, Lionel Messi will have his “last dance” with Argentina’s national team in a friendly match against Benin in Buenos Aires on October 6. The match against Benin — not the glitziest opponent, but one that should at least guarantee Messi a winning send-off — will be his 208th and final international appearance. He will fancy his chances of adding to his 125 goals for Argentina in front of, potentially, all of their 2022 World Cup-winning squad and their families. Spain’s World Cup-winning head coach Luis de la Fuente has agreed a new contract through to 2032. Spanish football federation (RFEF) president Rafael Louzan said the renewal spoke to its “project of stability and confidence”. Xhaka has apologised for what he described as a “mistake” made in a “state of emotional turmoil”, and has been left out of Switzerland’s squad for the upcoming internationals. According to a report from Blick, an outlet in Xhaka’s native Switzerland, over the weekend, the Lucerne public prosecutor’s office has opened proceedings against the national team captain, who is expected to be questioned in early October.
