Civilians carried strangers down flight after flight of stairs. At the Pentagon, men and women pulled colleagues from fire and wreckage. We honor the nearly three thousand who died. We honor the first responders who never came home. We honor the recovery workers who labored in the pit for months. We honor the families who have carried an empty chair for twenty-five years. Their names are not a slogan. They are a debt. Courage that day was not complicated. It was a hand on a shoulder in a dark stairwell. It was a radio call into dust.
