Any construction would have occurred only after millions of years of uplift and erosion brought the rock to the surface. The most frequently cited figure is about 12,000 years some researchers. Some state that after examining the walls and nearby dolmens, argued that the degree of destruction and burial is consistent with the catastrophic flooding that marked the end of the last Ice Age. In this view the walls were already standing when those events occurred and therefore predate the Younger Dryas interval (roughly 12,800–11,600 years ago). The absence of later cultural layers piled on top of the cyclopean blocks is taken as further evidence that no subsequent civilization reused or overbuilt the site. Because much of the complex is said to lie underground, the visible walls would represent only the latest phase of a far longer occupation. Writers in the Pleistocene Coalition circle extend the same logic, arguing that the region remained ice-free during earlier interglacials and could have supported megalithic activity tens of thousands of years before Clovis. Under this reading the builders would have belonged to a pre-diluvial culture capable of quarrying, transporting, and fitting multi-ton granite blocks with a precision that later peoples in the same landscape never matched. The walls would therefore stand as remnants of a North American megalithic tradition that ended with the close of the Pleistocene, leaving no successor civilization to inherit or explain them.
