Youth Survey | 67.60% of College Students Pay for “Good Stories”
A recent survey of 942 Chinese college students by China Youth Daily finds 67.6% prioritize compelling storytelling when choosing films, with comedy (65.1%) and animation (52.2%) being top genres.
Many students forgo cinemas due to lack of appealing titles. Despite marketing tactics like fan-driven ticketing, most agree a film’s lasting value depends on its core narrative quality. Students increasingly seek original, thought-provoking stories over formulaic blockbusters, viewing cinema as both emotional connection and creative inspiration.
The survey also highlights expectations for more affordable tickets, diverse genres, and authentic filmmaking that respects audiences’ intelligence.
