The Australian Government has announced it will work with the Tasmanian Government to redevelop and transform Hobart’s Derwent Barracks to help deliver new housing and support community growth. This co‑investment brings together all three levels of government to boost housing supply and support local communities, while enabling Defence to invest in future capability. Defence will carefully manage the transition in close consultation with Defence personnel, cadets and the community. The Defence and Veterans Workshop will remain on site following initial consultation. Defence personnel and cadets will not be moved until a suitable alternative is identified and consultations are complete. The move is expected to take at least 12 months. Read more ➡️

The Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) made their mark at the recent Australian Rover Challenge at 📍 Adelaide University, SA. 🤖 A triservice team of nine ADFA Trainee Officers and five civilian students from the University of New South Wales, Canberra, worked together as part of the Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) team, improving on last year’s efforts to place fourth overall this year. The Australian Rover Challenge is an international semi-autonomous robotics competition, where teams design and build a rover under 60kg to be operated remotely in simulated lunar operations. Ship ➡️ shore In 📍 northern Queensland, the @AustralianArmy's 10th Fires Brigade’s high mobility artillery rocket system (HIMARS) took to the beach with the help of HMAS Choules. Having earlier exceeded expectations by firing various missile types ahead of schedule, and at distances new to Army, attention has turned to the deployability of HIMARS on aircraft and ships to extend the ADF’s ability to defend Australia’s northern approaches. The platform has been certified to deploy on @AusAirForce C-130 and C-17 aircraft and on board the @Australian_Navy’s landing helicopter docks (LHDs). Soldiers fire up new skills on Balikatan In preparation for a live-fire serial during Exercise Balikatan, Australian gunners embedded with a United States high mobility artillery rocket system (HIMARS) battery exchanged lessons on tropical maintenance, launch preparation and turning sensor data into firing solutions. As observers to the live-fire, the Australian team gained insights into how targets were detected, tracked and engaged. Pacific partners deliver disaster support across PNG Australia and Papua New Guinea (PNG) worked together to deliver critical humanitarian assistance to communities across PNG following Tropical Cyclone Maila last month. Tropical Cyclone Maila brought destructive winds and severe weather, causing widespread damage, disrupting essential services and affecting communities across the region. In response to requests from the Government of PNG and the Autonomous Bougainville Government, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) activated aircraft and personnel to deliver immediate assistance as part of whole-of-Australian-Government support. They delivered more than 45 tonnes of critical humanitarian assistance stores, provided by Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States over two weeks, including essential items such as food, tarpaulins, blankets, shelters, hygiene kits, mosquito bed nets, water containers and solar lights to support displaced communities. Maritime Air Assault 🚁 @AustralianArmy soldiers from 5th/7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, and 7th Signal Regiment, conducted a joint training mission with the US and the Philippines that focused on long-range maritime air assault execution during Exercise Balikatan 2026. Inserting on CH-47 Chinooks and UH-60 Black Hawks, soldiers established a defensive perimeter, protected the inserted asset and then established observation posts to expand security coverage.
