Concerning the term "Judeo-Christian," which some people seem to mightily resent, I just think of it as a God ordained and planned continuity between the original religion of Judaism and the Christian faith that it unfolded into (according to Christian belief). The term should offend believing Jews more than Christians, but I doubt they're much offended by it either -- for different reasons. But why would Christians be offended by it? We know for a fact that God didn't -- doesn't -- change His mind. His salvation plan for mankind was laid out from the very beginning in Genesis 3. There is total continuity between the Old and New Testaments. The Old points to Christ in prophecy, typology and every other imaginable way, according to orthodox Christian belief -- and it is certainly what I firmly believe (and I wrote an entire book about exactly how the Old Testament points to Christ, as Jesus revealed to His disciples on the Emmaus Road in one of His resurrection appearances -- the greatest Bible study in the history of mankind. ) God orchestrated the entire plan and He designated the Jewish people to be His chosen people and He gave them His law and the priests, prophets and kings who would all culminate in the Messiah who would (and did) also come from the Jewish royal line of David. The continuity and unity between the Old and New Testaments is one of the most glorious discoveries you'll ever make as a Christian or as a Christian in waiting. It is mind-blowing. So of course the Christian faith grew out of Judaism, so why on earth would any Christian be offended by affirmation of that truth? When we read Old Testament stories, God is constantly judging Israel for turning away from Him -- idolatry and the like. As Christians we don't point to this as evidence that the Jewish people were particularly bad. They're part of the fallen human race. All people failed God and continue to as we are all sinners -- even regenerate Christians. So, think about it. Throughout the Old Testament God blessed Israel for obedience and in turn, punished them for disobedience -- apostasy and idolatry, etc. We are talking about the God of the Old Testament here -- who is the same Triune God Christians worship today -- God is unchangeable. So that same God commanded His people to worship Him, not any other gods. He commanded that they worship Him. No other religion claims that their god or gods commanded their followers to worship the God of the Bible -- the true God of the universe. But the God of the Old Testament (who is the God of the New Testament) commanded them to worship Him, even if His triune nature hadn't yet been fully revealed. So, again, He commanded them to worship the same God we do, even though, according to Christian belief, His triune nature hadn't been fully revealed yet. But Hs nature existed nevertheless, irrespective of whether everyone understood or believed it. The point is, God commanded the Jews to worship and obey the same God (the God of the Bible) as Christians -- and all people, truth be told, are commanded to worship today. This is a long way of saying that the Jews were commanded to worship the same God as we do today -- proving in yet another way, that our religion -- Christianity grew out of Judaism. I don't expect Jews to agree with this because they don't accept the New Testament, but I certainly don't intend to offend them by it either. I'm speaking here to Christians who seem oddly offended by the term Judeo-Christian. Who cares if it was a term coined in this century? It is not some political term -- even if some people use it as such. It is theologically coherent. The question of whether Jews and Christians today worship the same God is far trickier. They don't accept the divinity of Christ or God's triune nature, yet they do worship the God of the Old Testament, which we Christians believe is the God of the New Testament. That's a subject for another day. But we obviously differ in our belief that salvation is through Jesus Christ. Everyone on both sides understands that difference. So this message is to Christians who get hung up on Judeo-Christian. It makes theological sense. And the line of thinking I'm trying, inartfully to articulate here, occurred to me tonight as I was reading parts of the Old Testament in which God was chastising His people for this or that act of disobedience. That God was and is the same God we worship today. While I'm at it, I'll add that I fully believe God's land promise to the Jews (as part of the Abrahamic Covenant) is permanent and survives today. And I believe His other covenantal promises to Abraham and David and the rest are also still in force to the extent not already fulfilled -- such as the promise to bless all people and nations through Abraham -- the Gospel. There is absolutely no conflict between God's covenantal promises applying to Jews and Gentiles alike -- which He actually said in effect in Genesis -- and His permanent (everlasting) land promise to Israel. The promise to bless all people through Abraham (Israel and the Jews) did not involve replacement any more than the land promise did, because the promise of the Gospel was always -- and continues to be -- made to all people, Jews and Gentiles alike, which Paul made explicitly clear. And we don't have to be dispensationalists to believe the land promise is permanent; we just have to believe the Bible (especially Romans) means literally what it says and that fair exegesis doesn't lead to the church superseding or replacing Israel. And you Christians who have a grudge against Jews, which is outrageously unChristlike -- remember that God blessed us all through the Jewish line of David from which came our Messiah. He entrusted His law to them -- a law which has not been replaced, but fulfilled -- according to our Savior. The Jews did not kill Jesus in the sense that the haters like to claim. No; before God -- including God the Son -- created the universe He planned to become incarnate and suffer all the indignities of human existence as a fully divine human being, live a sinless life and then die for our sins thereby conquering satan, sin, and death. The salvation plan was ordained from the very beginning -- indeed prior to the beginning of time, because our omniscient God knew that man would fall and that the only way man could be reconciled to God and redeemed thereafter was through faith in His Son and His sacrificial death on the Cross. Jesus quite explicitly tells us that He voluntarily laid down His life for us. If Judas hadn't betrayed Him someone else would have -- someone had to or our reconciliation and enteral life with God wouldn't be possible. There is no other way to square God's perfect justice with His perfect love and grace. Our duty is to love the Jews, not hate them. God chose them. You'll never convince me otherwise, and you ought to pause very carefully and soberly before you reject that idea. God's beautiful and glorious salvation plan was conceived and locked in before Adam was created and before He and Eve sinned. The Bible -- Old and New Testaments -- tell of God's redemption plan, which is unfolded throughout Scripture, from beginning to end, and we must read the entire Bible as one unified redemption story. When we do, we'll be enriched and blessed divinely and exponentially. Thank you to the few who will have had the patience to read this unplanned, redundant, and unedited rant, which I emerged from bed to spit out here in this post in record time so I can now go to bed for real. So I hope it's coherent. God love and bless the Jews and all other peoples and may we live together in mutual love, harmony, and peace. Amen.
