The European Union has officially approved a bionic eye implant that gives blind people their central vision back. PRIMA, developed by Science Corporation, is a wireless ultra-thin microchip implanted directly beneath the retina. It works alongside a pair of camera-equipped glasses that project near-infrared light onto the chip. The chip converts that visual information into electrical signals that the brain reads as sight. Patients who had lost their central field of vision entirely - due to geographic atrophy, the advanced and previously incurable stage of dry age-related macular degeneration - can now perceive forms, shapes, and patterns again. The clinical trial results, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that over 80% of participants successfully regained the ability to read letters, numbers, and words. It progresses silently, destroying the central field of vision while peripheral sight remains, until daily life becomes increasingly impossible. For those patients, PRIMA represents the first viable path back. Commercial rollout has begun in Germany, with expansion across Europe underway. The company is working with the FDA under a Breakthrough Device designation to bring the implant to the United States.
