If the VCs won’t buy the token without getting equity why should you?
There are only 2 paths to token success
Either everyone agrees the equity is worthless and just a front to do business irl
Or the token has claim to equity and can be treated the same
Outside of this, the project needs to do a lot of work to earn trust
