NVIDIA's Matt Cragun on why self-driving has been perpetually 5 years away for the last 12 years and the long tail problem NVIDIA is finally solving: "Self-driving cars have been perpetually five years away for the last twelve years or however long it's been. The real challenge for everybody is how do you take care of what we call the long tail. The things you don't experience very often on the road but typically are the things you worry the most about." "The benefit of having a really large model, especially Alpamayo, it's been trained as a reasoning model. Not only does it see what you see or have perception, it also is able to think about how it should behave or what it should do." "Using the reasoning capability allows us to solve challenges that we wouldn't be able to solve with just a rule-based system. Being able to solve the long tail is really what we're trying to tackle. That's really the problem that everybody in AV is working on." "As we work further through that long tail of events, we get more and more confidence in the technology that we can deploy in a way that's safe." @nvidia

Today, we’re launching Alpamayo 2 Super, our frontier open reasoning model for autonomous vehicles. Beyond seeing, Alpamayo understands and reasons through the complex world - thinks before it acts. It’s a powerful backbone for robotaxis, trucks, shuttles, delivery vans, tractors and the long tail of mobile robots—billions of autonomous machines someday. We’re releasing it for commercial use under OpenMDW-1.1 so teams can inspect it, fine-tune it and deploy it—open models advance safety and security. The next wave of AI is robotics—and it starts with autonomous vehicles. Great work, Alpamayo team!

"Data stops being something you collect. It becomes something you compute." At #SIGGRAPH2026#, @liu_mingyu, VP of NVIDIA's Cosmos Lab, laid out why world models are the data engine of physical AI. Plus, he announced Cosmos-Dreams, a neural closed-loop simulator, and showed off a full demo of it in action. You can watch the full keynote here:
