Day 329 of building Asimov, the most developer-friendly humanoid robot.
A humanoid robot with full open-source blueprints just became buildable, not just researchable.
Asimov v1, from Menlo Research, publishes everything: mechanical CAD, electrical schematics, wiring harnesses, and a simulation model, all under open licenses.
It's a 1.2-meter, 35kg biped with 25 actuated joints, a camera, a microphone array, and onboard compute split across a Raspberry Pi 5 and a Radxa CM5. Strength specs are public too: a 15kg bicep curl and an 18kg lateral raise per arm.
Nobody has to wait for a factory either. Anyone with the fabrication know-how can source parts and build one from the published bill of materials, no license fee required.
Worth knowing: not buyable off a shelf. The DIY kit is a $499 deposit toward a $15,000 target price, shipping summer 2026, or full self-sourcing and fabrication.
An API, locomotion policy, and mobile app are all still "coming soon."

Asimov 1's torso is durable.
We're going to see a lot more opensource robots being built over the next few years.
Not just research prototypes but robots people can actually build, modify, simulate, train and eventually buy.
We're already seeing the beginning of this shift, with projects publishing CAD, simulation models, software and even complete hardware kits.
As the cost of hardware continues to fall, more independent builders, researchers and small teams will be able to create their own robots.
The interesting part won't just be the number of robots being built. It will be everything built around them parts, models, datasets, simulation environments, training tools and software.

One more thing from yesterday.
What makes that update special is that it's zero shot.
The policy was trained entirely in simulation, then run on the real robot with no tuning in between.
And it ran in IsaacLab, which we only moved to this week. Different physics engine, same configs, worked first try.
The hardware seems to be doing the quiet work here. Motor communication and firmware behave the same every run, so sim and real stay close.
