Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Kokurojo is a bit of Shakespeare and a bit of Samurai Columbo. I could have watched it for hours.
The protagonist of Kurosawa’s The Samurai and the Prisoner breaks tons of ‘rules’ of the Samurai code but is an incredibly convincing hero, strategist, leader, true to the code by violating it. Very much like the protagonist of Mizogouchi’s The Loyal 47 Ronin.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa is here and receives a huge applause. He tells people to sit down so we can watch his movie
The Samurai and the Prisoner is an epic triumph as Kiyoshi Kurosawa creates a Japanese parable mystery in 16th century Japan that feels like it was filmed during decades ago to its compliments. A tale of trust and betrayal at its core that is beautifully illustrated and commanded by a strong ensemble, this has to be one of the best films this year.

Kurosawa Kiyoshi’s first historical film THE SAMURAI AND THE PRISONER offers a master class in framing and blocking. Read @media_marshall's #Cannes2026# review.
The best Japanese film at Cannes is KOKUROJO — a Cloud follow-up, Kubi riposte, Knives Out farce, and PS5 exclusive all in one
Kurosawa Kiyoshi’s THE SAMURAI AND THE PRISONER is a tense chess match of wills inside a castle that erodes the soul. A jidaigeki so dense & ambitious that it nearly drowns in its own complexity, yet whose sharp human insight turns chaos into pure theater. A bold film. #Cannes#
