The Chernobyl reactor fire released approximately 400 times more radioactive material than the Hiroshima atomic bomb, according to IAEA reports. The engineering response was extraordinary: 600,000 liquidators deployed, a concrete sarcophagus built in 206 days, and a 2,600 km2 exclusion zone established. The New Safe Confinement - a 108-metre steel arch built to cover the original sarcophagus - was completed in 2016. It is the largest movable structure ever built. Designed to last 100 years. The disaster was catastrophic. The engineering that contained it was remarkable.
