President Jimmy Carter once told a joke during a speech in Japan that left the audience roaring with laughter. Curious about the reaction, he asked the interpreter how he had translated it so effectively. The interpreter reportedly replied, “President Carter told a funny story. Everyone must laugh.” In 1981, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter was preparing to speak at a Japanese college and decided to open with a joke to break the ice. After he finished, the interpreter spoke for only a few seconds before the audience erupted in laughter. Carter was impressed that the joke had been translated so quickly and seemed to land perfectly. Later, Carter asked the interpreter how he had managed it. After initially dodging the question, the interpreter reportedly admitted he hadn’t translated the joke at all. Instead, he simply told the audience, “President Carter told a funny story. Everyone must laugh.” Whether the story is entirely true remains uncertain, but it has become a well-known anecdote about the challenges of translation and cross-cultural communication.
