My 83 y/o grandma told me last Sunday that young people just don’t want to work anymore.
So I did the math in front of her.
Her first job paid $1.25 an hour in 1963.
Minimum wage today is $7.25.
I showed her that her $1.25 adjusted for inflation is actually $13 an hour in today’s money.
McDonald’s pays $7.25.
So minimum wage workers today make less in real terms than she did flipping burgers in 1963.
She said that can’t be right.
I showed her the numbers.
Then I showed her what her first apartment cost adjusted for inflation.
Then her first car.
She got quiet for a second.
Then said well I don’t know whose fault that is.
I said well you’ve voted in every election since 1964.
She asked if I wanted more sweet tea.
I said yes grandma.
I said yes.
