Prime Minister Takaichi’s election last year saw the country’s far-right become increasingly influential. Nations victimized by Imperial Japan have criticized the country for never reckoning with its past after its defeat in WWII, or even, in many instances, embracing it. According to a 2025 NHK poll, only 35% of Japanese citizens now view the Pacific War during WWII as a war of aggression.
