BlackRock, JPMorgan, Goldman and the NYSE. Almost 40 firms just live traded tokenized stocks and US Treasuries through DTCC (WSJ). JPMorgan turned shares of QQQ into tokens and then turned them back, proving we can tokenize and untokenize in production. The DTCC is on the precipice of the biggest change in financial markets since the 1970s and dematerilization. DTCC custodies $114 trillion in US securities and processed $4.7 quadrillion in transactions last year. Giant funds like Vanguard and Invesco who make those QQQ ETFs took part too. The opening basket: Microsoft shares, Circle stock, QQQ, SPY, SGOV, plus Treasuries across multiple maturities. Initially settling on Hyperledger Besu and Canton with a full launch in October, under a three-year SEC no-action letter, this is a live proving moment. October isn't far away... Compare that to the tokenized stocks that made headlines last year like those around the SpaceX IPO. Those were wrappers. A token tracking the price of a share held in an SPV with someone else's name on it. Fine for offshore retail, useless for a pension fund. DTCC's tokens carry the same legal ownership, the same dividends, the same voting rights as the underlying share, and convert back on demand. One security, two file formats. You can only do that if you're the depository. You can't tokenize what you don't custody, and DTC custodies most of the US market. DTCC's CEO told the Journal the focus is on ways to "free up trapped liquidity." And you can see that as you look at what they launched day one: collateral transfers, repo, and margin. Moving collateral that's currently stuck in settlement windows. Gloriously boring, and exactly where the money is. I'm so here for cryptos boring era. And once the securities leg of a trade lives on-chain, the cash leg has to catch up. A tokenized Treasury that moves in seconds wants to settle against money that moves in seconds. I expect the most interesting thing about October's full launch will be what shows up on the cash side.
