On July 29, 1858, the Treaty of Amity and Commerce was signed between Townsend Harris and the Tokugawa shogunate. This treaty opened Japan’s major ports and established the foundation for diplomatic and commercial relations between the U.S. and Japan. Four years after the Convention of Kanagawa in 1854, the persistent diplomatic effort and dialogue opened the door to a new era.
