Live TV still has this community feel - think World Cup And occasionally there is a series that releases an episode a week and gets a cult following But otherwise everything is downstream of ‘on demand’ And the common theme behind these examples is not being in control A series you can binge watch on demand; you are in control But there is no delayed gratification and less suspense; you don’t have to wait and then have time to discuss it with others if you don’t want to Not to mention we are now spoilt for choice Fewer options increased the likelihood of people watching the same things, but now there is so much content that it’s a chore to stay on top of things Unfortunately I don’t think there’s any way back

the value of watching TV is so low now before (back before streaming), you’d be participating in a common cultural moment. if everyone was watching a show, you wanted to watch it too. so there was some sort of a shared social element now everyone watches their own shows on their own time. every once in a while, you maybe find something you and your significant other can really dive into for a while otherwise, almost everything becomes missable, save for a couple of shows a year (at least that’s how i feel) would rather spend that time playing strategy or story-driven video games tbqh (which have been unfairly maligned and are cognitively one of the better forms of entertainment)
