I was deeply moved by the powerful speech delivered by MP Amina Farid, the sole woman among the 82 members of the Somaliland Parliament. Her words stirred something in me and forced a difficult question: Why are Somaliland’s women, who represent nearly half of the eligible voters and are equally educated, capable, and dedicated not represented in our political leadership? Why are Somaliland’s political elites continuing to sideline women, denying them the opportunity to lead and shape the future of our nation? As someone who believes in equality and progress, I acknowledge that some steps have been taken, but they are far from enough. Women remain profoundly underrepresented in the political arena. I don’t have a daughter, but I often ask myself: if I did, how would I explain to her that no matter her talent or qualifications, her gender alone might hold her back? It’s time to break down these barriers. It’s time to make space for all voices in leadership, because real progress is only possible when everyone has a seat at the table.
