“The tragedy of old age is not that one is old, but that one is young. Inside this aging body is a heart still as curious, still as hungry, still as full of longing as it was in youth. I sit at the window and watch the world pass by, feeling like a stranger in a strange land, unable to relate to the world outside, and yet within me, there burns the same fire that once thought it could conquer the world. And the real tragedy is that the world still remains, so distant and elusive, a place I could never quite grasp.” — Albert Camus, "The Fall"

Steve may be right (he most often is), but he outlines a scary scenario. I want politics to have (at least substantial) economic foundations.
Reading the reactions of financiers today, the overwhelming impression is they don't get it. They are convince that this is just bargaining and the tariffs will be reduced or massaged. When they realise that isn't going to happen the meltdown will really start.🧵

“Like the post-1945 British Labour governments, he wants to shelter domestic manufacturing and the working class behind tariffs while reducing overseas commitments. But the net result will be both economically damaging and geopolitically weakening. Americans will come to miss globalism and policing the world. They will belatedly realize that there is no portal through which the United States can return to the 1950s, much less the 1900s. And the principal beneficiary of Project Minecraft will not be Russia, but China. Call it Project Manchuria.”—@NFergus

Benjamin Franklin's words resonate today: "To lay duties on a commodity exported which our friends want is a knavish attempt to get something for nothing. The statesman who first invented it had the genius of a pickpocket. Most of the statutes, acts, edicts, and placards of parliaments, princes and states, for regulating, directing, and restraining of trade have either political blunders or jobs obtained by artful men for private advantage under the pretence of public good. In general the more free and unrestrained commerce is, the more it flourishes. No nation was ever ruined by trade."
