Today in Lake City, I unveiled a statue of Lady Columbia—the personification of the United States—as part of Florida’s ongoing celebration of our country’s 250th anniversary. Lady Columbia is perhaps most recognized from John Gast’s 1872 painting, “American Progress,” which portrays the spirit of Manifest Destiny. Her namesake is Christopher Columbus, whose crew member, Juan Ponce de Leon, led the first European expedition to Florida. These earliest chapters of Florida history were recognized when American pioneers began settling Columbia County 200 years ago. The Lady Columbia statue stands on a pedestal depicting the Sunshine State’s iconic symbols, landscapes, and historic moments. Be sure to stop by next time you are in Lake City.
