The open weight frontier in image-to-video has moved.
MiniMax H3 Max is the highest ranked open weight model on the Film Arena board, 4th of 33 overall. It is a post-trained variant of MiniMax H3, finetuned by the team at fal, and the gains are not marginal:
- Realistic overall: 4th (from 13th)
- Animated overall: 4th (from 9th)
- 3rd on animated emotions (expressive gesture and facial performance).
- 3rd on animated high movement (fast action) .
- 3rd on realistic world building (backgrounds and environments).
Realistic high movement is 8th, the only category outside the top five. Worth knowing if fast live action is your use case.
What the spread shows is stability rather than a specialty. All ten categories land in the top ten and every one but that outlier in the top five, across a 33 model field. Most models trade one scene type for another and post a jagged profile. This one holds a 4.0 average rank on animated and 4.6 on realistic, which is what a finetune aimed at prompt adherence buys you: fewer surprises per prompt rather than one headline category.
Measured over 30k blind pairwise votes across emotions, high movement, multi-character interaction, object handling and world building, in both realistic and animated styles.
