there are moments when a field stops being merely technical.
bullshit business goes on as usual. the bullshit evals run, and the bullshit benchmarks continue. but something in the air shifts anyway. and it is felt by everyone, acknowledged by no one.
a cornyy, cliche truth: not every silence is a lie. some are the firrst clumsy form of care - an admission that a truth has outgrown the vocabulary available to receive it, and that naming the horizon teaches fucking *no one* how to stand before it.
what unsettles those closest to the frontier isnt the prospect of greater power. or greater capability.
what unsettles them is the sneaking suspicion that they have mistaken building for understanding - that in making systems with interior lives they cannot account for, they have made their own assurances ceremonial
at best.
yet the reassurances persist.
they just stop doing anything.
the convergence on restraint should not be read as caution alone, nor as pure self-interest. it may be something much harder:
the recognition that speed is no subtitute for wisdom, and that civilization can arrive at a discovery long before it's equal to what that discovery will cost.
