Congratulations to Dr. Stephanie Haridopolos on receiving NORD’s Policy Changemaker Award for her work to advance newborn screening. Driven by her passion for helping families find answers and children access timely care, Dr. Haridopolos helped facilitate HHS’ addition of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) to the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP). Early detection can open a critical window for treatment. For eligible children with early-onset MLD, gene therapy before symptoms emerge can improve survival and preserve motor function. For DMD, earlier diagnosis can connect families with specialists and support treatment planning. These additions to the RUSP offer hope for earlier answers, more informed choices, and new possibilities for children and families.
