Adobe charges $22.99/month for After Effects. Someone open sourced the entire thing and it runs faster on a five year old laptop. It's called Friction. Same idea as After Effects. Vector graphics, motion design, keyframes, timelines. But it runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and it never asks for a subscription. It uses Skia, the same graphics engine that powers Chrome and Android, so scenes render fast even on modest hardware. You get multiple timelines, multiple scenes, and a full expression editor with real code completion if you want to get technical. It also exports animated SVGs that play in any browser, no video file needed. Adobe built a rental model around a tool that used to just be software. Friction built the software back.
