most ppl simply do not realize that before fb the internet was almost entirely anonymous. there was very little personal branding, in fact if you went into chat rooms or forums, you had no idea who was who. not only that but ppl were afraid to put in credit cards on the internet (it was considered dangerous).
anonymity or at least pseudo anonymity basically built the internet, & it was incredibly fun until fb came along & changed everything. like i was a 10 year old kid building websites, doing heavy ebay arbitrage, selling things, & no one really knew i was 10 years old. it was a beautiful new world, like a new frontier if you will.
