Our relationship with China matters - for security, the economy and climate. Glad to discuss Ukraine and the Middle East with Foreign Minister Wang Yi. We are taking a consistent, long term and strategic approach to relations with China, rooted in UK and global interests.

🖊️ The UK has ratified the BBNJ Agreement – a landmark international treaty and a major step to protect nearly two‑thirds of the world’s ocean.   A healthy ocean is a good thing for us all: 🐟 protected species and more biodiversity 🪸 stronger food security 🌱 greater climate resilience

I strongly welcome the announcement of an agreement between the US and Iran.  It is vital that toll-free freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is swiftly restored, so international shipping can get moving again to help the global economy and families here at home. The UK stands ready with France and other countries to support that process as needed. Our longstanding position is that Iran must never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon. The UK is ready to support the technical work to ensure that vital objective is implemented. This agreement is important for regional and global security and for the international economy. Thank you to all those involved in negotiations including Pakistan and Qatar. It is vital that progress continues - we stand ready to help make it a lasting peace.

In Beijing and around the world we celebrated the King’s Birthday on 11 June. The UK-China story is filled with remarkable people, including 2026 World Snooker Champion Wu Yize, 4x Olympic gold medallist Deng Yaping and actor/director Huang Lei, special Ambassador for UK on Stage

China is the second largest economy and like the UK is a permanent member of the UN Security Council. We must engage for the UK’s security and prosperity in line with British values. Met Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing today to discuss issues including re-opening the Strait of Hormuz, the war in Ukraine and Ebola.

Yesterday would have been Queen Elizabeth II’s 100th birthday. Her late Majesty was the first British monarch to visit mainland China, nearly 40 years ago in October 1986. This picture of the late Queen meeting schoolchildren in Guangzhou hangs in my Residence in Beijing

There are around 300,000 British nationals in the region being target by Iranian strikes. The UK is supporting our allies and partners, particularly in the Gulf, to defend themselves against unprovoked attacks on their territory

Growth at home is directly linked to our engagement with the world’s biggest powers.   Today I met with President Xi in Beijing. We affirmed our shared commitment to building a long-term and strategic partnership that will benefit both our countries, while maintaining frank and open dialogue on areas of disagreement.  As Prime Minister, I will always deliver in the interest of the British people.
