We have learned that you will be visiting China this week, and we also understand that you have consistently cared about and defended the religious freedom of Christians around the world. We therefore wish to invite your attention to the case involving Maizhong Church in Fuyang, Anhui Province, where our husbands — Pastor Zhang Sen, Pastor Chang Shun, and Elder Ma Tao — were arrested. We are Xu Chao, wife of Pastor Zhang Sen; Li Yunyan, wife of Pastor Chang Shun; and Li Mei, wife of Elder Ma Tao. Fuyang Maizhong Church in Anhui is a biblically orthodox Reformed church within the Presbyterian tradition. Pastor Zhang Sen, Pastor Chang Shun, and Elder Ma Tao were arrested by the Fuyang police on June 29, 2025, and have now been detained in the Fuyang Detention Center for more than ten months. They have been charged with the crime of “organizing illegal gatherings.” The grounds for these accusations include: Accepting invitations, as pastors, to attend and officiate weddings for fellow Christians. Going to the detention center in March 2024 to welcome home Christians who had been administratively detained because of their faith. Just last Thursday, on May 7, 2026, the Yingzhou District Court of Fuyang held a pretrial conference, and the case is expected to go to trial next month (June 2026). If your schedule during this visit permits, we would like to invite you to attend the trial of the Fuyang Maizhong Church case in Anhui and witness firsthand the prosecution of Christian pastors in China. Pastor Zhang Sen, Pastor Chang Shun, and Elder Ma Tao have done nothing more than preach the Word of God, teach their congregation according to the Bible, and practice the two greatest commandments taught by Jesus: to love God and to love one’s neighbor as oneself. Whether attending the weddings of fellow believers or welcoming released Christians home from detention, all that they did was an expression of loving their neighbors as themselves. Since the arrest of these three men, our families have endured the great suffering of forced separation.
