His point here is a good one. The thing is though, the hedonic treadmill is real. And most people who haven't slept under a bridge or the like, aren't able to appreciate a house like this. They can't get past how it looks because to them, the primary purpose of a house isn't shelter. It's comfort. Existential and physical. Anyone could enjoy this house. But most people aren't willing to do what is required to do so, which involves running the hedonic treadmill in reverse. Most of us would need to sleep under a bridge first. And we probably should.
