On this day in 1718, Maria Gaetana Agnesi was born in Milan, Italy.
She was the first woman in the Western world to publish a major mathematical work. Her two-volume textbook Instituzioni analitiche ad uso della gioventù italiana (Analytical Institutions, 1748) provided a comprehensive treatment of algebra, differential calculus, and integral calculus. In 1750 Pope Benedict XIV appointed her professor of mathematics at the University of Bologna.
