On June 3, he was detained at the airport and has been held for nearly 11 weeks. China accused him of “espionage” and “endangering national security” — without providing any concrete evidence. Today, the Trump administration formally designated Min Zin as wrongfully detained. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the determination after a thorough review. The State Department is calling on Beijing to immediately release him and all other U.S. citizens who are arbitrarily detained or under exit bans. The safety and security of American citizens is the State Department’s top priority. This is the second American academic recently designated as wrongfully detained by China. China invites people in for conferences, then arrests them at the airport and calls it “handling the case according to law.” This is classic hostage diplomacy. Academic freedom means nothing to the CCP — if your research touches their interests, they can label you a “spy” at any time. The U.S. State Department has been repeatedly warning in recent weeks: traveling to China carries real risks — arbitrary enforcement of laws, exit bans, and wrongful detention. The danger is especially high for Chinese Americans and dual nationals. The CCP does not respect your U.S. passport; it treats ethnic Chinese as its own and can arbitrarily target them. To everyone planning to visit China for family, tourism, or conferences — especially Chinese Americans — think carefully. An invitation from the CCP does not guarantee you will safely return. China must release Min Zin immediately.
