BIG | 🇫🇮🇺🇦‼️ Finland is reshaping how it trains conscripts based on lessons from the war in Ukraine, with the growing dominance of drones forcing changes in camouflage, field positions, dispersion and everyday battlefield routines. According to Yle, reconnaissance troops may no longer sleep together in a single heated tent, instead dispersing through wooded areas with sleeping bags and camouflage. Ukraine has demonstrated how thermal signatures from heated shelters can make positions easier to detect with drones and modern surveillance systems. Units are also being taught to spread out more widely so that detecting one position does not expose an entire formation. Trenches and defensive positions are receiving greater overhead protection and camouflage, while Finland’s new “Training 2026” program shifts more instruction from classrooms into the field. Drone operations and counter-drone tactics, movement through mined areas, first aid and psychological preparedness are among the areas receiving increased attention. After trials in four units, the program is expected to expand across the Finnish Defence Forces next summer. The broader lesson from Ukraine is reshaping military training well beyond the frontline itself. With drone-dominated “kill zones” extending for tens of kilometers in some areas, dispersion, concealment and reducing detectable signatures are increasingly becoming basic requirements for survival on the modern battlefield.
