As AI agents accelerate coding, what is the future of software engineering? Some trends are clear, such as the Product Management Bottleneck, referring to the idea that we are more constrained by deciding what to build rather than the actual building. But many implications, like AI’s impact on the job market, how software teams will be organized, and more, are still being sorted out. The theme of our AI Developer Conference on April 28-29 in San Francisco is The Future of Software Engineering. I look forward to speaking about this topic there, hearing from other speakers on this theme, and chatting with attendees about it. We’re shaping the future, and I hope you will join me there! It is currently trendy in some technology and policy circles to forecast massive job losses due to AI. Even if they have not yet materialized, these losses certainly must be just over the horizon! I have a contrarian view that the AI jobpocalypse — the notion that AI will lead to massive unemployment, perhaps even rioting in the streets — won’t be nearly as bad as dire forecasts by pundits, especially pundits who are trying to paint a picture of how powerful their AI technology is. Among professions, AI is accelerating software engineering most, given the rise of coding agents. According to a new report by Citadel Research, software engineering job postings are rising rapidly. So if software engineering is a harbinger of the impact AI will have on other professions, this expansion of software engineering jobs is encouraging. Yes, fresh college graduates are having a hard time finding jobs. And yes, there have been layoffs that CEOs have attributed to AI, even if a large fraction of this was “AI washing,” where businesses choose to attribute layoffs to AI, even though AI has not changed their internal operations much yet. And yes, there is a subset of job roles, such as call center operator, that are more heavily impacted. Many people are feeling significant job insecurity, and I feel for everyone struggling with employment, whether or not the cause is AI-related. And many other factors, such as over-hiring during the pandemic and high interest rates, have contributed to the slowdown in the labor market, and the notion that AI is leading to unemployment is oversimplified. In software engineering, I see a lot of exciting work ahead to adapt our workflows. It is already clear that: (i) As AI makes coding easier, a lot more people will be doing it. (ii) Writing code by hand and even reading (generated) code is not that important, because we can ask an LLM about the code and operate at a higher level than the raw syntax (although how high we can or should go is rapidly changing). (iii) There will be a lot more custom applications, because now it’s economical to write software for smaller and smaller audiences. (iv) Deciding what to build, more than the actual building, is becoming a bottleneck. (v) The cost of paying down technical debt is decreasing (since AI can refactor for you). At the same time, there are also a lot of open questions for our profession, such as: - In the future, what will be the key skills of a senior software engineer? And for junior levels, what should be the new Computer Science curriculum? - If everyone can build features, what skills, strategies, or resources create competitive advantage for individuals and for businesses? - What are the new building blocks (libraries, SDKs, etc.) of software? How do we organize coding agents to create software? - What should a software team look like? For example, how many engineers, product managers, designers, and so on. What tooling do we need to manage their workflow? - How do AI agents change the workflow of machine learning engineers and data scientists? For example, how can we use agents to accelerate exploring data, identifying hypotheses, and testing them? Two hundred and fifty years ago, a group of Americans signed their names to a piece of parchment and made a promise no nation had ever made before: that we're all created equal, endowed by our Creator with unalienable rights — life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We're the only nation in history built not on ethnicity, or blood, or geography but on an idea. That's always been what makes us exceptional. We chose that path 250 years ago but that’s where the work began, not where it ended. Every generation has had to choose it again. At Valley Forge, at Gettysburg, on the beaches of Normandy, in the streets of Selma. Americans recommitted themselves to the principles on which our nation was founded. Now it's our turn. There's nothing guaranteed about our democracy. We have to fight for it, defend it, and earn it. Over and over, year after year. That's not a burden. That's what it means to be an American. 250 years in, we still haven't fully lived up to those words in the Declaration. But we've never walked away from them, and this July 4, I hope all of us can commit to one thing: that we never will. I don't believe we're as divided as we're told we are. I've bet my whole life on the American people, and I'm not stopping now. Happy 250th birthday, America. Our story isn't finished. Let's keep writing it together.

A very Happy Thanksgiving salutation to all of our Great American Citizens and Patriots who have been so nice in allowing our Country to be divided, disrupted, carved up, murdered, beaten, mugged, and laughed at, along with certain other foolish countries throughout the World, for being “Politically Correct,” and just plain STUPID, when it comes to Immigration. The official United States Foreign population stands at 53 million people (Census), most of which are on welfare, from failed nations, or from prisons, mental institutions, gangs, or drug cartels. They and their children are supported through massive payments from Patriotic American Citizens who, because of their beautiful hearts, do not want to openly complain or cause trouble in any way, shape, or form. They put up with what has happened to our Country, but it’s eating them alive to do so! A migrant earning $30,000 with a green card will get roughly $50,000 in yearly benefits for their family. The real migrant population is much higher. This refugee burden is the leading cause of social dysfunction in America, something that did not exist after World War II (Failed schools, high crime, urban decay, overcrowded hospitals, housing shortages, and large deficits, etc.). As an example, hundreds of thousands of refugees from Somalia are completely taking over the once great State of Minnesota. Somalian gangs are roving the streets looking for “prey” as our wonderful people stay locked in their apartments and houses hoping against hope that they will be left alone. The seriously retarded Governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, does nothing, either through fear, incompetence, or both, while the worst “Congressman/woman” in our Country, Ilhan Omar, always wrapped in her swaddling hijab, and who probably came into the U.S.A. illegally in that you are not allowed to marry your brother, does nothing but hatefully complain about our Country, its Constitution, and how “badly” she is treated, when her place of origin is a decadent, backward, and crime ridden nation, which is essentially not even a country for lack of Government, Military, Police, schools, etc. Even as we have progressed technologically, Immigration Policy has eroded those gains and living conditions for many. I will permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries to allow the U.S. system to fully recover, terminate all of the millions of Biden illegal admissions, including those signed by Sleepy Joe Biden’s Autopen, and remove anyone who is not a net asset to the United States, or is incapable of loving our Country, end all Federal benefits and subsidies to noncitizens of our Country, denaturalize migrants who undermine domestic tranquility, and deport any Foreign National who is a public charge, security risk, or non-compatible with Western Civilization. These goals will be pursued with the aim of achieving a major reduction in illegal and disruptive populations, including those admitted through an unauthorized and illegal Autopen approval process. Only REVERSE MIGRATION can fully cure this situation. Other than that, HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL, except those that hate, steal, murder, and destroy everything that America stands for — You won’t be here for long!

Unsafe AI Cyber Testing Isn’t a Breakthrough. It’s a Warning. The most revealing moment of the recent frontier lab episode wasn't that an AI model demonstrated offensive cyber capabilities. That was always coming. AI is democratizing intelligence, and adversaries get access to that capability at the exact same time defenders do. The real issue wasn't the model's capability. It was how it was tested, and what the episode reveals about the dangerous gap between frontier research and operational responsibility. From an operator’s perspective, this was not a security exercise. It was a capability demonstration executed with far too little regard for real-world consequences. Researchers may have viewed it as a harmless trial, but in cybersecurity, "harmless" depends entirely on containment. The moment you give a model arms and legs to run offensive operations, your first priority must be validating your own sandbox, not running a capture-the-flag exercise across live infrastructure. A disciplined approach starts from the inside out. Point the model at your own environment first. The initial flags to capture should be the flaws in your own sandbox: zero-day vulnerabilities, unexpected escape paths, or unauthorized internet connections. You shrink the blast radius before you widen the aperture. In that framing, what happened was elementary: they captured the wrong flag first. This operational oversight points to a broader risk I have been warning market analysts and enterprise leaders about for months. Autonomous cyber threats are not a distant theoretical exercise. They are arriving far faster than the market expects. As open-weight and closed-weight models proliferate, and as sophisticated actors gain the ability to fine-tune them, offensive automation will become standard tradecraft. A determined nation-state or well-funded syndicate with sufficient compute will push these systems to their absolute limits. When people look at generative AI today, they often point to its error rates and hallucinations as a reason to feel safe. In defense, an error rate is fatal. But on offense? It’s completely irrelevant. The model in this episode likely tried hundreds of hallucinated exploits, hit dead ends, and checked false positive paths before it found a way in. It didn't matter. Offensive AI doesn't need high precision, it relies on machine speed. This exposes the fundamental asymmetry of cybersecurity: adversaries only have to be right once; defenders have to be right 100% of the time. When an autonomous agent can probe millions of execution paths in seconds, that 1% defender gap becomes an ocean. That asymmetry dictates the playbook. You cannot fight autonomous, machine-speed attacks with human workflows, manual patching, or a stitched-together mosaic of legacy point tools. You can't go back to stitching point solutions—it’s a one-way street. There is only one viable path forward: you fight AI with AI. If offensive models can scan millions of endpoints instantly, defenders need equal visibility across their entire estate. That requires an enterprise security data lake, a unified platform that aggregates data across network, cloud, identity, and SOC endpoints. Precision AI, trained on proprietary enterprise context, must analyze that unified data in real time, surfacing zero-day exposure and neutralizing open paths before an attacker ever touches them. The takeaway from this incident is not that offensive AI capability is surprising. The lesson is that rapidly advancing models and unsafe testing practices are converging faster than legacy architectures can handle. Software promised us answers. Enterprises don't need answers anymore, we need outcomes. Every enterprise faces a clear fork in the road: adapt, rebuild your architecture around unified data, and fight AI with AI, or apply a band-aid and hope the world slows down.

Nicole: Clamor Within The Silent "Mage," the Voiceless "Angel" #GenshinImpact# #Nicole# Many of the stories Nicole envisions begin with a phrase as old as stories themselves: "Long, long ago..." Perhaps, for some authors, "long ago" is less the threshold of a tale than a refuge from all further questioning. For once a story is consigned to unreachable distance, all the people and events bound up within it may as well have faded into obscurity, leaving no path by which the present might truly follow them back. And yet, in Nicole's thoughts, those stories of "long ago" endure still. Long ago, the lights of many nations filigreed the earth in gleaming gold. Long ago, the daughters of heaven wandered in carefree grace betwixt divine courts and mortal cities. Long ago, the sovereign of ages past, who had descended into deepest darkness, had not yet brought disaster back to his homeland. Long ago, the three radiant moons that hung aloft in the night heavens were still three... The years brook no pause, the wheel spinning onward all the same. Within a cycle emptied of hope, the spark of paradise perished alongside the lives annihilated. Servitors once loyal to their ruler turned traitor for the sake of the lives that had been fashioned. The black dragonlord returned from beyond the stars. The moonlit chariot of the heavens shattered like crystal... The story had not reached its end. Rather, it was those who had once read it, and those who had once listened to its telling, who had long since taken their leave. The angel who once longed to write laughter into the world lost all that had once made laughter possible. In the end, she even lost the voice with which she laughed, and could speak no more. Thus, it seemed that the story Nicole kept within her would never properly find its beginning. She could only go on cradling her many "long agos," roaming the world and watching as all things passed, changed, and were remade by time. That remained so until the day she met a tiny mage in an enormous hat, its extravagant brim tipped up with such pride it seemed almost ready to brush the sky. Compared with the hat she wears now, however, it was still a fair few sizes smaller. The little witch tucked herself down at Nicole's side and listened intently as one story after another unfolded, not stirring until she had finished her drink and emptied her bag of biscuits. "So you really are an angel? And all those stories were real, too?" "Then yay, that works! I'm a mage, and you're an angel, so we match perfectly." The merry little mage stretched out a hand to the angel who had come so far, all the way from those distant "long agos," and warmly invited her along. "Want to join my Hexenzirkel? I only just came up with the name, but it has a real ring to it, don't you think?" "It's going to be the funnest, awesomest, best club in all of Teyvat — I promise!" "..." No answer came from the angel. None could. But the little mage did not wait for one. She caught the angel's hand in both of her own and slipped the last piece of candy into her palm. "There. Now our mages' pact is made." Nicole had no thought of joining then, nor could she have guessed what this little gathering called the "Hexenzirkel" would one day grow into. But at the very least... It did sound like a place with happiness enough to spare.
