New, first-in-the-nation home landscaping requirements approved. The California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection has approved new defensible space regulations to help reduce the risk of wildfire spreading to homes. Under the new rules, homes in wildfire-prone areas will be required to maintain a nonflammable five-foot buffer around structures. The regulations will be phased in over a five-year period for existing homeowners in wildfire-prone areas, with an emphasis on education over enforcement. Creating defensible space is an important part of preparing homes and communities for wildfire.
