🛰 Faster detection supports a faster response. The first three operational FireSat satellites launched last week as part of CAL FIRE's partnership with the Earth Fire Alliance. FireSat is designed to help detect and monitor wildfires from space, adding another source of information for firefighters. Once all satellites are in orbit and are fully operational, they will be able to detect fires as small as 5 by 5 meters (two parking spots) anywhere on Earth, providing updated observations every 20 minutes or less. Combined with aircraft, cameras, drones, mapping technology, and reports from crews on the ground, satellite data can help provide a clearer picture of wildfire conditions. 🚁 SEE WILDFIRE SMOKE? STAY AWAY. Pilots and drone operators (yes, including drone hobbyists) should remain at least 15 miles from wildfire smoke and avoid active aerial firefighting operations. Wildfire airspace is hazardous, with low-flying helicopters and airtankers, rapidly changing conditions, and reduced visibility. Not every wildfire has a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) in place when aircraft first arrive. Even if your GPS or flight app doesn't show one yet, treat any smoke column as active firefighting airspace. Unauthorized flights can ground firefighting aircraft, delay emergency response, and may result in significant fines, criminal penalties, and liability for firefighting costs. 🚁 Expanded air power for Southern California. ✈️ We’ve expanded our aviation resources in San Diego County with the addition of a C-130H airtanker and an S-70i CAL FIRE HAWK helicopter, giving firefighters more tools to respond quickly when wildfires start. The C-130H can deliver thousands of gallons of fire retardant to help slow a wildfire’s spread, while the CAL FIRE HAWK can make rapid water drops, transport firefighters into remote or rugged terrain, and assist with rescue missions. These aircraft are stationed at CAL FIRE’s Ramona Air Attack Base, strategically positioned to support wildfire response throughout San Diego County and across Southern California. Together, they strengthen California’s ability to keep new fires small and protect lives, property, and natural resources. Our strike teams are officially back from Colorado.   After several days supporting wildfire response through mutual aid, our personnel have safely returned to California.
