He spent roughly two years turning down roles he knew he could easily get, even while the offers kept coming. Eventually there was nothing. And the crazy part is that he didn’t just become “the serious Matthew McConaughey.” He completely changed what people thought he could do. DALLAS BUYERS CLUB won him the Oscar. MAGIC MIKE became a huge hit. TRUE DETECTIVE became a phenomenon. INTERSTELLAR proved he could carry a massive studio movie. Even at the time, critics were calling it an astonishing turnaround.
