The famed Nepalese climber Nirmal Purja, who made history over the years by trekking some of the world’s highest peaks, has been confirmed dead after an avalanche struck an expedition in the Himalayas earlier this week.

Preliminary assessment made by Chinese and Nepalese experts and official institutions shows that the tragic mudslide was triggered by a collapse of a high-altitude glacier in Nepal. We will continue the all-out effort to search and rescue foreign as well as Chinese nationals.

The devastating flash floods in the Himalayan region swept so many people downstream that authorities in one Nepalese district have begun burying bodies in temporary graves before they can be identified.

According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on August 27, Nepalese officials told the BBC that the glacier collapse that caused the devastating flood occurred on the Nepalese side of the Himalayas. [ Field Footage ] On the morning of August 26, 2026, a sudden and devastating mudslide originating from the Nepalese side struck Gyirong Port in Tibet’s Gyirong County, a major China-Nepal border crossing. CCTV footage showed people fleeing in panic as a massive wall of mud, rocks, and water rapidly engulfed buildings, vehicles, and the checkpoint area, cutting off roads, communications, and power. Local authorities have reported major casualties and missing persons, with large-scale rescue operations now underway. We pray that all those affected remain safe and that casualties can be kept to the absolute minimum.
