Today 81 years ago, the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima hastened the end of WWII. While the devastation of nuclear weapons should never repeat itself, the particular context of the bombing must always be remembered. The right-wing forces in Japan have been using the bombing to gain sympathy and escape accountability for Japan’s war crimes, which killed millions of lives in Japan’s neighboring countries. Ironically, those right-wing forces are now clamoring for a nuclear Japan, which is most alarming. Though the Tokyo Trials ended decades ago, the jury is still out on Japan’s attitude toward history.

Jay Tarriela, dismissing every inconvenient fact as “fake news” is hardly a credible approach. Such maneuvers cannot alter reality, nor will they mislead the international community. In recent days, Philippine vessels have repeatedly intruded into China's territorial waters off Huangyan Dao, while turning black into white and hyping up the issue with malicious intent. China firmly opposes this. Huangyan Dao has been Chinese territory since ancient times. China was the first to discover, name, and exercise long-term and effective jurisdiction over it. As early as the Yuan Dynasty, China had already surveyed Huangyan Dao and incorporated it into its national map. Prior to 1997, the Philippines never raised any objection to China's sovereignty over Huangyan Dao. And the Philippine government once confirmed to the Philippine Amateur Radio Association that Huangyan Dao was not within the territorial sovereignty of the Philippines. The Chinese side possesses solid evidence in this regard. The territorial extent of the Philippines is defined by a series of international treaties, including the 1898 Treaty of Peace between the United States and Spain. Huangyan Dao, located west of 118 degrees East longitude, lies entirely outside the limits of Philippine territory as demarcated by those treaties. China's will to defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity is as firm as a rock, and its determination to safeguard peace and stability in the South China Sea is unshakable. Any form of infringement, provocation, or political manipulation is doomed to fail. — Deputy Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy Guo Wei
