Early on, I had to confront some major weaknesses. I have a terrible rote memory—I can't remember anything that doesn't have a clear reason for being what it is. Because of that, I was a bad student and I hated school. Details have always been a mess for me. To supplement my own shortcomings, I learned that I need to surround myself and work with people who are meticulous and detail-oriented. Beyond that, my early audaciousness came with a lot of arrogance—until I got the shit kicked out of me enough times to learn fear. But what I ultimately realized through that process is that your weaknesses don't really matter. What matters is recognizing them, finding the right people to compliment you, and learning from your mistakes. #Principles# #SelfAwareness# #RadicalTruth# #RayDalio#

When starting out with no revenue, you have a choice. You can stay out of the jungle, take the safe path, and have a regular job. Or you can go into the jungle, face the things that can kill you, and reach for the upside. I made a choice about what I wanted in life—and I knew I wanted to go into the jungle with people who see things differently than I do, so we could navigate it together. To collaborate successfully, you have to do three things: First, put your honest thoughts on the table for everybody to look at. Everyone's thoughts are different, and you have to be willing to look at them openly. Second, know the art of thoughtful disagreement. Ask yourself: how do you work through disagreements to get a better answer than you would have come up with individually? Third, if the disagreements remain, you have to have protocols for getting past that. In our case, we have an "idea meritocracy" through believability-weighted decision-making. When you have a system where the best ideas win out, the results are going to be so much better than if you just stuck with the ideas inside your own head. #Collaboration# #IdeaMeritocracy# #Teamwork# #RayDalio#

When I talk with a "Shaper" like Elon Musk, what stands out is the ability to operate at both the big-picture level and the granular detail. I remember him walking me through the details of his car—from the screen to the button—and in the same breath talking about putting a watering can with a plant on a rocket to send to Mars just to establish "first life on Mars" and inspire people. True shapers naturally bridge the gap between grand vision and high-level execution. Credit: Sam Parr, Shaan Puri, and @myfirstmilpod #RayDalio# #ElonMusk# #Vision# #Leadership#

What makes a "Shaper"? It’s a unique personality type—people who are driven by the compulsive thrill of taking an idea from visualization to actualization. For these people, it’s not about security or making money; it’s about the thrill of the climb.
