Elon Musk’s path toward trillionaire status has slowed as Tesla ($TSLA) and SpaceX ($SPCX) lose some recent momentum, though his estimated net worth still stands around $925 billion.
Musk’s fortune is up more than $305 billion since the start of the year and remains larger than the combined wealth of the next three richest billionaires.
Tesla could become a major catalyst this week. The company is expected to unveil its long-delayed Roadster, with pricing starting around $200,000 and a limited Founders Series planned at $250,000.
Investors are also watching Tesla’s third-quarter delivery numbers. Prediction markets expect roughly 450,000 to 475,000 vehicles, compared with about 480,000 deliveries in the second quarter.
Tesla has benefited from higher gasoline and diesel prices, which could strengthen EV demand, particularly in Europe. However, rising costs have pressured free cash flow, while its Robotaxi business faces increasing competition from Alphabet-backed Waymo.
SpaceX is another major factor in Musk’s wealth. Shares are trading around $148, roughly 40% above their yearly low but still about 34% below their all-time high.
The company’s upcoming first orbital Starship test will carry Starlink V3 satellites, potentially improving network capacity and speeds. Starlink generated more than $4.29 billion in second-quarter revenue, representing about 53% of SpaceX’s total.
Musk owns roughly 48.5% of SpaceX and about 20.3% of Tesla, making both companies central to whether his net worth eventually crosses the $1 trillion mark.

Microsoft ($MSFT) co-founder Bill Gates said he does not want the U.S. to slow AI innovation, but he believes stronger safeguards and monitoring are necessary as the technology becomes more powerful.
Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Gates dismissed the idea that a simple AI “kill switch” is enough to manage future risks. He said current systems are not yet autonomously taking over computers in ways humans cannot stop.
Instead, Gates called for laws requiring companies to closely monitor advanced AI models and maintain detailed records of what those systems are doing.
His concern is less about AI independently escaping control today and more about people using increasingly capable models for cyberattacks, bioterrorism or other dangerous purposes.
Gates warned that AI could eventually be powerful enough to contribute to events causing catastrophic loss of life, saying the potential consequences could reach as high as “a billion deaths.”
Asked what he would tell President Donald Trump, Gates said the U.S. should continue innovating quickly while establishing stronger oversight standards rather than imposing a broad slowdown.
Trump has similarly argued against regulations that could significantly slow American AI development, saying the technology could become larger economically than the Industrial Revolution while maintaining that existing government authority can address serious misuse.
Gates’ position therefore falls between the two extremes: keep advancing AI, but require stronger monitoring, accountability and safeguards before increasingly powerful systems become harder to manage.

Elon Musk (
@elonmusk) said SpaceX ($SPCX) is only “2 to 3 years away” from potentially launching Starship on an hourly basis, outlining an extremely aggressive long-term cadence for the reusable rocket.
The comments came as Musk reaffirmed that Starship Flight 14 is scheduled to launch Sept. 28 from Starbase, Texas, with a 75-minute launch window beginning at 7:15 a.m. CT.
Flight 14 is expected to become Starship’s first orbital launch attempt and will carry the first batch of operational Starlink V3 satellites.
The mission represents an important step in SpaceX’s transition toward using Starship for large-scale Starlink deployment. The company has already begun winding down Falcon 9 Starlink launches from Cape Canaveral while continuing Falcon 9 missions from Vandenberg.
Musk has said the next-generation V3 constellation could dramatically expand Starlink’s capacity and has predicted that the network could eventually become a de facto global internet provider.
Separately, Musk said launch turnaround time rather than fueling will become the key constraint as Starship operations scale.
His longer-term target is even more ambitious. Musk has said SpaceX could eventually conduct more than 30 Starship launches per day by 2030, equivalent to roughly 10,000 launches annually.
Flight 14 could also include another major technical milestone, with Musk previously suggesting SpaceX may attempt the first mid-air catch of the vehicle.

“Shark Tank” investor Kevin O’Leary has shared a wealth philosophy centered on liquidity, arguing that entrepreneurs should prioritize accessible cash over simply accumulating assets.
O’Leary said he does not consider someone truly wealthy until they have at least $5 million in liquid cash, separate from the value of homes, cars or collectibles.
His reasoning is that liquidity creates flexibility. Once an entrepreneur has enough cash available, O’Leary believes they can take bigger risks, start new businesses and recover more easily if a venture fails.
He has also argued that founders should be willing to sell their businesses when a serious buyer appears, even if the offer is not the absolute highest price they might eventually receive.
According to O’Leary, entrepreneurs can usually negotiate for somewhat better terms, but holding out indefinitely can mean missing an opportunity to convert years of work into liquid capital.
He sees the entrepreneur, not any single company, as the more valuable asset. His view is that someone who successfully built one business can often use the proceeds and experience to build another.
O’Leary has said not every company will succeed, and that entrepreneurship is ultimately a portfolio of risks. In his view, a few major wins can be enough to create lasting financial security.
The broader principle is simple: assets can create wealth on paper, but liquidity gives entrepreneurs the freedom to act when the next opportunity appears.

Steve Jobs once warned Google co-founder Larry Page that the company risked losing its edge by spreading itself across too many projects.
Jobs believed great companies needed sharp priorities, disciplined execution and a willingness to cut ideas that did not work. His concern was that without focus, Google could eventually suffer from the same organizational problems he associated with Microsoft.
Page later acknowledged that Jobs had a point, saying, “he was right,” but made clear that Google’s broader approach was intentional.
Page wanted Google, and later Alphabet, to pursue ambitious projects across multiple industries rather than concentrate only on its core search and advertising businesses.
That philosophy eventually helped shape Alphabet’s structure, allowing businesses and research projects to operate with greater independence while still benefiting from the resources of the larger company.
Page believed companies should pursue major technological breakthroughs rather than limit themselves to incremental improvements, even if that meant accepting more complexity and risk.
The contrast highlights two very different management philosophies.
Apple built its success around focus, a relatively concentrated product lineup and tight control over execution. Alphabet embraced diversification, experimentation and long-term bets across areas including AI, autonomous vehicles, cloud computing and life sciences.
Both approaches ultimately produced extraordinary businesses, showing that there is no single formula for building a dominant technology company.
